Charles H.D. BOLAND - Group of Dogs
Framed 20" x 28"
Unframed 30" x 38"
Charles Boland was born in the middle of the 19th Century in Spa, Belgium.
He was a painter of animals, genre scenes, landscapes and portraits
.
His depiction of animals, rather than just being formal compositions were proper character studies of the “sitters” in question. He used a very “painterly” and direct style, and we can often find the use of humour and a narrative quality found in his choice of subject matter.
He was a pupil of the Antwerp Academy and one of the founder members of the young artists circle known as ‘Als ik kan’ in 1883
He exhibited at the Triennial Exhibitions in Antwerp, Ghent, and Brussels.
For illustrations of his works see the Dictionary of Animal Painters – Belgian and Dutch Artists born between 1750 and 1880 published by Berko.
