Frans MOORMANS - Belgian School

Genre painter who was born in Rotterdam in 1831 and died in 1893

He was educated at l’Academie d’Anvers and became a Professor at l’Academie in Amsterdam. While studying at the Cours des Beaux Arts in Anvers and upon his debut, it was noted by the Professor of the Academy of Moormans:- “He was a serious artist, paying a scrupulous detail to all objects. He had an elaborate balance in his compositions”.

In Moormans work, the viewer has to admire the artist’s degree of historical accuracy. The appeal of his glimpses into the past, even the pleasure of prying into their houses and wardrobes, has an undeniable fascination, which the artist has identified, and produced with great success.

Moormans lavished rich colour into these delightful scenes and detailed these well-balanced works with a masterful and fluent brush. Patrons of his day were captivated by the domesticity of his scenes as much as we today revel in his romanticised pastiches of a bygone age.

He was awarded medals at various exhibitions, most notably at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889 and at the Paris Salon. His works are held in a number of museums, including Montreal and Anver Museum.

Moormans’ work has reached figures up to £20000 plus premium (£25000) in auction

Price: 7,500.00 GBP
