OIL AND TEMPERA ON CANVAS - 18" x 24"
"This is a theme I have worked on several times employing different types of flowers and background subjects, it is a theme that has been very popular with collectors. Blue and white china always has tremendous beauty whether applied to a plate, a cup or a vase, and works equally well when depicted in a painting. I have used my knowledge of eastern decorative painting to apply a light blue floral pattern on the body of the vase which has been placed on a fairly nondescript work surface that is without perspective. The surface might suggest perhaps a desk or table top, it is in any case immaterial as the primary concern here was to insert sections of attractive colour with tone and texture as a simple backdrop to frame the main subject. I painted a decorative patterned frieze in deep burgundy behind the vase which would normally suggest a wall or vertical surface behind, though it appears to join with the lower sections. The upper background has all the elements of a vibrant summer sky though the composition is essentially an interior." Mark Briscoe, 2010
